The Detroit Public Safety Foundation hosted its 13th annual Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony on November 13th at Ford Field, welcoming a sold-out crowd of more than 600 attendees. The evening honored the extraordinary courage and dedication of Detroit’s first responders while bringing together civic leaders, families, and community partners in a powerful celebration of service.

Mayor Mike Duggan opened the event with welcoming remarks, followed by Mayor-Elect Mary Sheffield, who also presented one of the evening’s top awards. Jason Colthorp, WDIV anchor, served as emcee.

A key highlight of the night was the presentation of the 2025 City Change Maker Award, given by Eric Larson, CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, to Bob Riney, CEO of Henry Ford Health. Mayor Elect Mary Sheffield presented the Public Safety Partner Award to the Detroit Athletic Club Foundation for its steadfast commitment to Detroit’s safety community.

In total, 37 first responders were recognized for acts of bravery and service. Their families filled the audience, sharing emotional moments—such as a grateful fire survivor joining the firefighter who rescued him on stage, and powerful body-cam footage of officers saving a victim from a burning vehicle. One young girl proudly shouting, “That’s my daddy!” captured the heart of the evening, emphasizing the profound impact these heroes have on the families who stand behind them.

This year’s ceremony was generously supported by the Penske Corporation as Title Sponsor and the Detroit Lions and PVS Chemicals as Commanding Sponsors, along with many additional partners who help make the event possible.

The Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony continues to shine a light on the remarkable individuals who protect Detroit every day—and the loved ones who support them.
